  • I ordered a small electronic component from Aliexpress. A local New Zealand retailer has the part for $37 plus ~$8 for delivery. The Aliexpress price was 95 cents including delivery.

    I felt guilty that, at the low price, someone, probably in China, is being exploited for the transaction to work. Then I had an interaction with a local courier company and realised it would be almost certain someone would still be exploited if I paid that NZ firm $45.

  • One of the most New Zealand things I can think of is how people say hello to a driver when they get on a bus and then thank the driver when they get off.

  • Every spring since we moved to Auckland there warm nights when one thinks ‘perhaps it’s time to put the duvet away and bring out the summer bed linen’. Then every year we have another cold snap and celebrate our idleness.

  • Up early here in Auckland for the opening game of the Rugby World Cup from Paris. It’s France versus New Zealand and, so far, a cracker of a game.
